Letter To The Editor

Time Off Is Not Required for President's Day

I recently read one of your readers' "feedback" on national holidays here at school and why he feels we should have had a day off this past President's Day.

I am utterly appalled and angered at the way this young man put his letter together. To question why our university feels the need to celebrate holidays on the Jewish calendar, as well as the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is completely ignorant, as well as offensive.

Sharp's letter seems to almost downplay the significant role King played in the molding of America and its history. Although King was not a president like Lincoln and Washington, he was just as much of an American leader as the two presidents were. If not for the very important work of King, the face of this country and this university would not be the way it is today.

I was also humored by the way Sharp believes he needs a day off from school to show his patriotism. We all remember the days before college, when President's Day meant another three-day weekend in our school schedule. Well, we're in college now, and things have most definitely changed from those earlier years.

So my challenge to this young man is when President's Day comes around next year, instead of worrying whether or not you have to wake up for your morning class, take some time out of your schedule to honor and celebrate the lives and accomplishments of former presidents, (such as) Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.
