Andy Eilertsen's response to the review of the Pearl Jam CD (11/20/02 issue, feedback) reads like a bad joke. I wonder what would make a great band in his mind - consistent radio play; MTV exposure; the band's record label lining the pockets of the media conglomerates? I can't call myself a Pearl Jam fan, I listen to a song here and there, but there's no denying their considerable fan base, influence, and longevity.
Since the release of Vs, Pearl Jam has defined themselves by not creating music videos or promoting singles through the industry machine. Granted, they built their fame through the radio and MTV, but now they've proved that they can survive without them.
Yield is often cited as Pearl Jam's best album by fans, though the letter writer called that CD horrible. Eilertsen should learn that most musical genius doesn't get heard on his local radio station. One of the more mainstream cases I have in mind: The Flaming Lips. Some would dismiss them as a one hit wonder, but I can call their latest CD pure genius without expecting much knowledgeable opposition. Strangely, I haven't heard them on the radio much. They don't manufacture hits anymore. So, never mind, don't check them out. They suck.
