I would like to express my disappointment in The Spectrum's coverage, or lack thereof, regarding voter registration on campus. Registering to vote is not only a civic duty, but extremely important in regards to New York State higher education. Nationally the 18-24 year age range is considered to be the most apathetic segment of the voting population.
The upcoming gubernatorial election this November is particularly important to the student population. The governor that is elected will be in control of the amount of public dollars allocated to higher education. It is important that students are well aware of their power as the electorate, as well as educate themselves on how the governor may affect the higher education. I hope that as the election draws near The Spectrum will take an active approach and provide students with the resources to educate themselves about the candidates running for governor. If we, as student voters, are not careful, we may watch our funding disappear.
I would like to take the time to thank the 700 students who took the time to register, as well as the students who made registering their peers a priority. I would like to send a special thanks to NYPIRG, Political Science SA, NYSSA, the Leadership Development Center, and to all of the volunteers who took the time to help, THANK YOU!!
