The Results Are Shocking

Letter To the Editor

To the Editor:
One of the main stereotypes of politics is the assumption that all politicians are sleazy. Even when you see a politician who seems to genuinely care about making a difference, there's that lingering suspicion in the back of your mind that he or she is corrupt. Not usually being one to believe in stereotypes, I'm going to have to agree with this particular one, after witnessing the actions of the Results Party in this year's Student Association elections.

At the last few club council endorsement meetings, the representatives of the UB Students' Party were subject to what I would term an ambush by members of the Results Party and those friendly to Results. While Results Party members were asked questions such as "What are your goals" and "What is your platform," the UB Students' Party were asked exponentially more difficult questions. The room seemed loaded with friends of the Results Party, namely current NYSSA delegate George Pape and current SA Vice President Josh Korman, both of whom routinely made fun of and laughed at the answers of the UB Students' Party members. I'm glad that such mature and professional people currently represent us.

I am a firm believer that in politics, all one needs to succeed are good ideas and the desire to carry out those ideas. To me, it seems like the UB Students' Party is made up of normal students who actually care about making a difference. Their platform is centered on helping the everyday student. The Results Party doesn't really seem to have a platform, actually. They just list their members and positions held. All I get out of any argument or statement made by Results is, "We're the good old boys, we deserve to stay because we've been here for so long. No room for fresh young faces with new ideas."

The Results Party is doing everything in its power to undermine UB Students, and this whole election has been very shady. Why wasn't UB Students allowed to hold a town hall meeting, which was their right? Why couldn't the Results Party or Barbara Edsall just come out and tell Jason Litwak that Yesenia Diaz was in a car accident? The actions of Results-friendly people turned a valuable tool like the club council endorsement meetings into a farce. This election seems like a complete mockery of democracy. I cannot comprehend the completely rude and unprofessional manner in which UB Students' has been treated by the current administration.

Actually, on second thought, now that I've seen the way the members of the Results Party conduct themselves, I can believe it.
