UB Football

The team begins spring workouts today at 3:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Bills Fieldhouse in Orchard Park, N.Y. Practice sessions are closed to fans. The team will begin to evaluate contenders for starting positions in 2002, including quarterback. Spring practice culminates with the annual Blue vs. White game on April 17 at UB Stadium.


Kent State

The MAC men's basketball champions have advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament via a 69-61 upset win over Oklahoma State. Kent won Thursday in their opening game in Greenville, S.C.


"The MAC should have had more than one team in the NCAA Tournament," ESPN's Dick Vitale wrote on http://www.espn.com. "Kent State didn't waste any time proving how good the MAC is."


The Golden Flashes will face Alabama in the second round on Saturday.


MAC Postseason Basketball

Five MAC basketball teams (three men's, two women's) received postseason bids to national tournaments, four are still alive.


The Bowling Green men's team is the only MAC school to fall thus far, losing in the "first round" of the NIT. As mentioned, Kent State is still alive in the NCAA Tournament. Also, Ball State's men's team won in the "opening round" of the NIT and will face St. Joseph's on the road tonight in the "first round."


On the women's side, Ball State has reached the second round of the NIT and will host Valparaiso. Kent State begins play in the NCAA Tournament Friday.


Buffalo Sabres

The team used a 31-save performance from goaltender Mika Noronen to pick up a 3-1 upset victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night at the First Union Center in Philadelphia, Pa. Buffalo has now won four of their last five games.
