Swim Teams Each Split Weekend Meets


The UB men's and women's swim teams both went 1-1 Saturday as they split conference tri-meets with Ball State and Bowling Green in Muncie, Ind.

Buffalo's men's swimming team earned their first MAC victory of the season with a 127-109 win over Bowling Green, however losing to the host team, Ball State, by a 183-54 score. The split brought their season record to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference competition.

The team's only victory of the competition was in the final event, the 800-meter free relay. The four-person team of Jon Yarger, Tony Lizauckas, Dustin Hui and Alan Lowe narrowly defeated Bowling Green by half a second, finishing in 7:17.19.

The meet featured a few season-best times.

Hui scored personal bests while finishing third in both the 500 freestyle (4:51.62) and the 1000 freestyle (10:09.78). Mike Szyprowski raced a season best time of 4:26.09 while finishing third in the 400 individual medley. Lizauckas also finished third in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:59.25.

The women's swim team missed a sweep of the tri-meet by a mere point.

Buffalo took it to the wire, but could not overcome host Ball State, losing 150-149. The Cardinals finished first in the final event of the day, the 800 relay, earning them 13 points and the win.

However, Buffalo had no trouble with Bowling Green, winning 209-90.

Freshman sensation Jennefer Brankovsky took three individual events, the 200 butterfly (2:07.41), the 200 breaststroke (2:25.01), and the 400 individual medley (4:34.42).

Abby Delia took two events for the Bulls, the 100 (59.64) and 200 (2:07.90) backstroke.

Jolie Pun won the 500 freestyle (5:13.22) and Carrie Quinlan was victorious in the 100 butterfly (58.62).

As a team, the foursome of Lisa Boettrich, Sara Defendorf, Gigi Tapia and Melissa Schafer, won the 400 medley relay in 3:59.33.

In diving, the freshman duo of Tracy Hoover and Kim LaHaye swept their competitions. Hoover, taking the one-meter event with 239.75 points, and LaHaye in the three-meter board with 222.35 points.

The women's swim team has a record of 4-2 overall and are 2-2 in MAC competition.

Both teams will compete in another MAC tri-meet Saturday at Northern Illinois where the Bulls will face NIU and Toledo.
