Women's Basketball Announces Two Early Signees

UB head women's basketball coach Cheryl Dozier is getting her recruiting done a little early this year.

The coach announced Tuesday that two early signees have committed to joining the Bulls for the 2002-03 season. Brooke Meunier, a 5'9" guard from Heritage High School in Michigan, and 5'10" guard/forward Hollie Cook from Horseheads (N.Y.) High School will come to Alumni Arena next season.

"Both young ladies are proven winners who have shown the ability to lead a team and to perform well under pressure," Dozier said. "Both come from very strong high school programs and AAU programs that are nationally known and respected, and that experience will allow them to come in and make an immediate impact on our program."

As a three-time co-captain, Meunier led her high school team to the Class-A State Finals. She was selected as the Saginaw Conference's Most Valuable Player, and was a first-team All-State selection by The Associated Press, the Detroit Free Press, and the Detroit News. Meunier averaged 17.7 points per game in her senior year.

"Brooke is a combo guard who has the ability to shoot the ball and break it down off the dribble," Dozier said. "She has a tremendous amount of physical strength and athletic ability ... she is also a strong student academically."

In her junior year of high school, Cook averaged 15 points per game as her team went to the New York State Section IV Class A Championship. She also led her Central team to a gold medal in the Empire State Games last summer, posting a game-high 36 points in the gold-medal game.

"Hollie is a solid all-around player who gets the job done on the defensive end of the floor as well as the offensive end," said Dozier. "Her biggest strength is her ability to play defense, and we'll look to her to be a defensive stopper and cause havoc for our opponents."
