Letter To The Editor

The Money Grab Begins Here

I agree with Senator Mahon: SA clubs not doing well could be threatened with de-recognition solely due to overall budgeting concerns and the need for more money in the Senate Allocation Fund. I know some of the largest, most active and most useful clubs sometimes have trouble finding officers.

Secondly, I know, because my friend told me, that some of the meetings the clubs are required to attend - and here I disagree with Senator Mahon - are scheduled suddenly and at funny hours with little notice in order to accommodate other events that group wants to schedule in the room reserved for that club such as renting the room to community organizations to raise money for Alumni Arena's mortgage and for building a new Alumni Arena and for a thousand other reasons all which apparently take precedence in the mind of those who (would like to) have control, is one example.

In fact, this is a common situation in the United States. Whenever a worthier cause is discovered, the money grab begins. Examples: sudden un-announced school district budget votes, scholarship funds "not being fully used" have money it could be said stolen from them rather than allowing the money to grow to benefit recipients the funds were not put in place for, and used to help other students considered equally worthy by those wealthy people unfortunately entrusted with the scholarship money; and the list goes on. I also agree with the other man, though, that some clubs are very parochial and do not welcome people outside their little club clique, so maybe that club is not benefiting the university as a whole in any way.

Editor's note: Renting meeting rooms to meet such expenses as Alumni Arena's mortgage is the author's postulate.
