Crime Update

Hazardous Waste Scare

A student working in the Biomedical Research Building Wednesday, Nov. 21 reported receiving "hot" readings on a Geiger counter, indicating radioactive material. The student reported the incident and the UB Department of Occupational and Environmental Safety was notified.

The department sent out a hazardous materials team to investigate the site. After checking and cleaning the area, the team reported that the readings on the Geiger counter were "shine" readings, or readings picked up from hazardous waste that had already been disposed. No hazardous material was discovered outside of the proper disposal containers.

Attempted Vehicular Arson

A student discovered several burnt matches in the air holes of her vehicle's gas tank Sunday, Nov. 18.

The vehicle did not catch on fire because the matches blocked air from entering the system and combusting, said Richard Linde, assistant director of University Police.

University Police does not have a suspect at this time.
