Passing Offense
UB's offensive attack was very balanced, so one could not say that either the passing game or the rushing game made the difference for the Bulls. The offensive line formed the pocket nicely. Freedy was like a general, leading his team to victory in a hostile environment. Bartoszek accounted for eight points, catching a TD pass and two-point conversion. No turnovers.

The Bulls triple threat of "Flash" Gordon, Dwarte and Grundy ran successfully as the offensive line opened up gaps into the linebackers and secondary. Watching cornerbacks and safeties try to tackle the powerful "Flash" was comical. Dwarte showed his greatest asset, speed, on the game-winning TD. Buffalo ran for 150 total yards.

Buffalo had trouble when the Black Knights started to abandon the run. Army used three wide receivers, a tight end, and often sent their running back into the flat; this made for a lot of one-on-one coverage against UB. Black Knights QBs totaled 272 yards passing. UB, however, would not have won were it not for this unit's three INTs.

Army never got into a rhythm running the ball. The Bulls' defensive linemen pushed the Black Knights' line back, and the linebackers filled the gaps well. UB's secondary came in to help string wide runs over to the sidelines. Army ran for only 96 total yards.

Pelz was perfect, scoring 12 of Buffalo's 26 points. Kick coverage, however, did not fair as well. The Black Knights did not break one, but they often had good returns, setting up good field position.

Nobody else did, but the Bulls believed they could win the whole week, a testament to Hofher's ability to convince his team that they are good enough to play on the same field as some of college football's most storied teams. Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor's game plan exposed a suspect Army defense, and put UB in situations where they took advantage of favorable match-ups. The Bulls overcame a full momentum shift after allowing Army back in the game. I still wonder why Freedy did not run right through the back of the end zone on the fourth-down play with four seconds left - it could have cost them the game.
