The Position

Dennis Black's position as chief Student Affairs officer requires him to design and implement policies in the interests of UB's 24,000 students.

The Office of Student Affairs is responsible for: Student Union and Activities, Residence Life, Public Safety, Faculty-Student Association, Special Events, Campus Transportation and Parking, Student Health Services, the Counseling Center, the Living Well Center, Career Planning and Placement, Judicial Affairs, Student Leadership and Development, Multicultural Affairs, Disability Service, Child Care and Student Insurance.

The Person

Black earned both his bachelor's and juris doctorate degrees from UB in the 1970s.

Black began his career at UB as the executive director of Sub-Board I Inc. from 1978 to 1981. He has held a number of positions at UB since, including dean of students, associate vice president for the Division for Student Affairs and his current role, vice president for Student Affairs, which he assumed in 1997.

Black also served as an adjunct assistant professor in the Graduate School of Education from 1988 until 1991, and from 1993 to the present.

He is the editor of "Perspective: The Campus Legal Monthly" newsletter, which reaches over 1,700 colleges and universities, and compiled a book named "Maintaining Perspective" from the "Perspective" newsletter, published in 1997.

Mr. Black has worked with the Faculty-Student Association, the Intercollegiate Athletic Board and the Undergraduate College Assembly. He is also a past volunteer for New York state's amateur athletics Empire State Games, the state Special Olympics, the 1993 World University Games and the United Way as an organizer.

Black is a chairperson of the board of trustees of St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute and serves on the board of trustees of Hilbert College. He also served as the chair of the University at Buffalo SEFA/United Way Campaign.

Black lives in Grand Island with his wife, Leilani, and their two children, Cory and Bethany.
