Bulls Fall to Toledo
Junior standout Andrea Sullivan provided the lone goal for the UB women's soccer team as they yielded a 2-1 loss to the Toledo Rockets at home Friday night. It was the first defeat the first the Bulls have suffered in MAC action this season.
Toledo jumped out to an early lead as forward Robin Davidson opened the scoring on a solo effort just 9:17 into the game, beating junior goalkeeper Emily Cox. The one-goal lead held up for the entire first half, as UB was unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities in the opening stanza.
The Bulls finally broke through and tied the game when freshman Breanna McJury set up Sullivan's tally in the 63rd minute. The tie game lasted merely seven minutes, until the Rockets reclaimed the lead for the final time.
Cox, who started the game in goal, made five saves. The Bulls out-shot their opponents 17-15.
Toledo improved their season record to 3-2-1 (2-1-1 in the MAC), while Buffalo fell to under .500 at 3-4.
Just three minutes into overtime, sophomore Nicole Olszewski seized opportunity and lifted the women's soccer team (4-4, 3-1 MAC) to a 2-1 victory over the Bowling Green Falcons (3-2-2, 0-1-1 MAC) last Sunday. The goal was Olszewski's sixth of the season. She has now scored in five of UB's eight regular season contests, and was named MAC player of the week.
The score stood at 0-0 throughout much of the game, as solid defense and missed opportunities reigned supreme until the Falcons capitalized on a free kick to take the game's first lead in the 60th minute of play. UB found themselves down in the contest for the second time in a row.
Senior Paula Sinclair was the first to answer the call for Buffalo, scoring just over a minute later on a pass from sophomore Lauren West. Sinclair's tally was her third of the season, and provided a huge boost in momentum for the team.
The game almost didn't make it to overtime, however, as Olszewski had a few chances to end it early, but came up short each time.
A pair of sophomores, Erin McGarry and Robin Aparo, made the set up for Olszewski's game-winner, which gives her 17 points on the season, more than two per game.
Once again the Bulls out-shot their opponents, recording a 21-13 advantage. Emily Cox got the start in goal again, and performed well, making five stops.
Next up for the Lady Bulls is a long home stand, in which they'll face divisional foes Miami Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. and Ball State Sept. 30, before playing host to Northern Illinois and Western Michigan on Oct. 5 and 7, respectively.
