The Buffalo-Army football game scheduled for this Saturday at West Point, N.Y. has been added to the list of cancellations in response to the national tragedy, team officials announced Wednesday night. The schools are currently looking at options to re-schedule the game at a later date.
The university is following the policy set by the Mid-American Conference, which announced in a statement that all conference athletic events will be postponed through Saturday. Included in the postponements are football games between Eastern Michigan and Akron; Miami, Ohio and Kent State; Youngstown State and Toledo; and Southern Illinois and Ball State.
"Clearly, there is now emerging a national consensus on the advisability of major college football competition this weekend, and our institutions very much respect that," MAC Commissioner Rick Chryst stated. "As stated earlier, we support the decision-making process that each of our schools has engaged in, and certainly understand the dynamic context in which those judgements are being made."
The UB sports schedule resumes Sunday when the men's and women's soccer teams will host a pair of games. The women open the doubleheader at RAC field when they take on conference foe Kent State at noon. The men will face Detroit Mercy at 2 p.m.
"We feel that this is the best way to resume our activities, allowing the proper time to pay homage to those injured or killed in this tragedy," stated Director of Athletics Bob Arkeilpane. "Like our campus community as a whole, we had student-athletes and coaches who were directly affected by the events of Tuesday and our thoughts and prayers have been with them as well as the victims."
