A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie wins over Spring Fest crowd

A late lineup change didn’t impact this year’s Spring Fest’s turnout. And it didn’t impact the crowd’s energy either. Opener Rich the Kid pulled out of his slot on Friday, just one day before he was set to open for Lil Baby and A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. But his replacement, New York rapper Young M.A, didn’t feel anything like a replacement.

UB Choir prepares for Spring concerts

UB Choir Director Claudia Brown doesn’t care about being new. Brown, who began directing the choral program in 2017, harbors the challenge of running vocal groups and channels it into building a strong and diverse performance.

Vampire Weekend fans didn’t want to leave Tuesday night’s show and neither did the band, which performed for an additional 45 minutes after running through the setlist.

Sean Ryan is the Dance Captain, swing, and an understudy for the 20th Anniversary Tour of “RENT.” He was also in the “Fame: The Musical,” and “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella” National tours. The ‘16 music theater alum sees his time performing at UB as instrumental to who he is as a performer.

Sean Ryan never knows when he has to jump into a role. He has to be available at “any given notice” as an ensemble understudy in the “RENT” national tour. Ryan performs as a swing –– an understudy for ensemble roles –– for the character Mark.  But just a couple years ago, he was gracing stages at UB.

Retired music mogul Shep Gordon holds a copy of his documentary, which Mike Myers made about his life. Gordon often refers to his time at UB as some of the greatest years of his life.

Chefs, drugs and rock n' roll

Shep Gordon’s parents brought their son to a Queens Greyhound station in the summer of 1964 and loaded his bags onto a midnight bus to Buffalo. Once Gordon got off the bus, he and a friend decided to hitchhike all the way to Buffalo State College, where they heard “beautiful women” attended school. 

“Little” stars Regina Hall and Issa Rae. The film is shot as a reversal of the hit “Big,” when Hall’s character is turned into a child.

Hollywood is gearing up for a summer full of blockbusters but that doesn’t mean April has any less of a selection. Audiences have been anticipating big-name films from superhero flicks to female-driven comedies. The Spectrum compiled a list of what to look out for this month. 

The Buffalo Chips, UB’s all-male a capella group is performing their Spring Fling concert this Friday in Slee Hall. The concert is a celebration and send-off for the group’s senior members.

Spring fling

The Buffalo Chips are sending off their seniors and celebrating their 24th anniversary this Friday. The Chips, UB’s all-male a cappella group, have won several awards and recently released their EP “Shout.” This Friday, the Chips will take to Slee Hall for the annual Spring Fling show. This concert will feature Exit 8, SUNY Geneseo’s coed a cappella group.

ChoreoLab’s performance titled “POWER: the preservation of order” had students, faculty and guest artists work together to bring new ideas and technology into the Theatre and Dance Department.

Thinking outside the box

ChoreoLab presented a full display of dance, lighting and projections in the CFA’s Black Box Theatre last weekend.

On Monday, SA announced that Lil Baby, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodi, and Rich the Kid would perform in this year’s Spring Fest. The Spectrum compiled a playlist of the artists' songs, to prepare for the upcoming concert.

'Trapper's delight:' A Spring Fest playlist

The Student Association announced the lineup for this year’s Spring Fest last Monday. The May 4 concert will feature rappers Rich the Kid, A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie and Lil Baby. Students’ reactions to the announcement have been mixed, but generally positive.

Buffalo is known for its famous food.  But locals know that food isn’t the only thing these restaurants have to offer.  The city is also known for its famous music scene. Many restaurants are able to combine the two for the ultimate Buffalo experience. The Spectrum has compiled a list of restaurants that offer live music near South Campus. 

On Thursday, SA President Gunnar Haberl said SA would do the “morally right” thing and work with other SA officials to recognize oSTEM.

Student Association president promises to work with SA officials to help recognize oSTEM

Less than 24 hours after The Spectrum’s article on SA’s denied oSTEM recognition, SA President Gunnar Haberl promised to “do the right thing.” Haberl said the SA e-board will work with the SA senate to do the “morally right” thing and celebrate oSTEM as an SA club. He said the senate, along with the e-board, would also look at current SA policies set for club recognitions.

Oozefest, UB’s annual mud volleyball tournament, celebrates its 35th anniversary on May 4. The event was created in 1984 as a way to help students bond and de-stress before exams.

'The Secret of the Ooze'

Jim Gerace wasn’t sure what he stumbled across on an overcast April day in 1985. His editor at The Spectrum needed someone to cover a mud volleyball game –– the second of its kind –– despite the cold Buffalo weather. Gerace flipped a coin with another photo editor to see who would be stuck with the task.
