Caveat Emptor

Two weeks ago, had you asked the average high school student who Joseph Kony was, they would probably assume he invented the hot dog.

"An Educated ""Yes"""

If you happen to have $40 million, the Buffalo City School District could really use some cash. That's the amount of funding that the state might remove over this and next year after the Buffalo Teacher's Federation (BTF), the teachers union in Buffalo, overwhelmingly supported a measure to maintain an attendance clause in this year's teacher-evaluation agreement. In an attempt to reform New York's school system Governor Cuomo mandated that every school district come up with a plan to institute a system to evaluate educators.

The Savior Who Delivered

In 1998 the Colts were in the same situation they're in now, having the first overall draft selection and a choice between two high-profile quarterback prospects.

Twisted Logic

Every day, more and more harrowing and horrifying tales are coming out of Indiana and Kentucky. According to the National Weather Service, at least 30 tornadoes descended and scarred the landscape on Friday.

A Trendy Spot to Grab a Cup

Where else would I go to write a column about how fantastic Starbucks is than the excellent establishment itself? I walked in, was greeted with a warm smile and the uniquely delicious smell of slightly burnt coffee combined with the sound of brewing coffee pots and lightly-playing hipster music. I ordered my favorite winter drink (grande skinny vanilla latte) and began to write about how Starbucks is the best place to get coffee on campus. To start off, Starbucks is much more than just a counter where you order a drink and wait in a disorganized mob until your drink is prepared.

So before I get started I have to make sure you all know what you're getting into by reading this piece: I'm weird as can be when it comes to food.

Excuse Me While I Roll My Rim

I don't usually get coffee in the morning but when I do...wait, scratch that ? I always get coffee in the morning, and when I do, I prefer to drink the delicious, well-priced coffee of Tim Hortons. Tim Hortons products have been consistently tasty since the shop opened in 1964.

Ending It Right

I don't know if I've ever seen a better way to cap off a regular season than the completely perfect experience that was the men's basketball game Saturday night. There was something special about how it all went down, and I couldn't ask for anything more from both the team and the crowd. Mitchell Watt being hoisted on the shoulders of the hundreds of students on the court and carried off as a hero as chants of "M-V-P" reverberated through the arena was incredible. In my four years here I've always envisioned Alumni Arena that way ? packed out to near capacity, with an electric feeling throughout the crowd, and that's exactly what there was on Saturday. It was amazing. There has been a lot of struggle to get fans to come out to Alumni Arena in recent years.

Red and Green

In America, the War on Drugs isn't a literal war. Mostly, it's a concerted effort by the federal government to take strong police action against the drug trade.

Rush of Blood from the Head

It's almost like a physical law of the universe: if you give someone a national live talk show, he or she will inevitably say something stupid and offensive.

OPINION

"Get a Clue, Santorum"

Eight states currently allow same-sex marriage. Eighteen thousand married gay and lesbian couples reside in California, though Proposition 8 was passed, making same-sex marriages illegal. At least 131,000 gay and lesbian couples live across the U.S., according to the 2010 census (and this census was done before New York State legalized same-sex marriage this past July). And Rick Santorum wants to unmarry every last one of those couples.

OPINION

Parents Know Best

Most of us don't want to admit when our parents are right. We put up a huge fight and talk back in an attempt to prove a point and then it blows up in our faces.

Make a Decision

It's been a month since the SA Senate determined that the InterVarsity Christian Fellowship was violating university and SA rules by requiring its leadership to sign a "basis of faith." This piece of IVCF's constitution forced those elected to sign a document that affirms the entire "trustworthiness and authority of" the Bible. Just in case you've missed the entire "gay marriage" debate that's been raging the past few years, there's a line in the Bible that reads "thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is an abomination." Apparently, gay Christians don't exactly agree with that line. You can't really blame them for cherry picking the Bible, really.

OPINION

"Whelp, You Asked For It"

Monday's edition of The Spectrum ran a letter from IVCF representing the club's opinion on its flagrant violation of SA rules, subsequent suspension, and outright refusal to amend its constitution despite being given months to do so.
