Nuts at the Kavinoky Theater

In Dale Wasserman's stage adaptation of Ken Kesey's powerful novel "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," now showing at the Kavinoky Theater through October 13th, the idea that our own mental and emotional state could be used against us is as chilling and resonant today as it was when introduced in 1962.Milos Forman's 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson as the headstrong Randle Patrick McMurphy went on to earn the top five Academy Awards (film, actor, actress, director and screenplay), and has been the standard of every institutional drama since.

A Streetcar Named Desire

"A Streetcar Named Desire," the final installment of Studio Arena Theatre's Tennessee Williams retrospective, is nothing short of exhilarating.Although the production stalls at some points due to choices made in the lighting (for example, having the theater bathed in full darkness every few scenes makes it difficult to keep one's mind on the production) and one or two scenes that seem out of place (such as Blanche's (Susan Wands) attempt to seduce a young messenger boy), this piece is one of Studio Arena's best productions ever.

Increased Summer Offerings May Ease Class Squeeze

With the hope of reducing class sizes and providing students with the opportunity to complete their degrees faster, UB Provost Elizabeth Capaldi is proposing an increase in the number of courses offered during summer sessions. The current summer program offers a limited selection of classes and sections, leaving most students to take general education courses during the fall and spring semesters, which are often quickly filled.Capaldi's proposal would offer more sections of lower-level classes during the summer and free up space in classes during the academic year that are often filled to capacity. The provost also hopes to offer a "head start" program for incoming students, more summer study options for graduate students and more positions for teaching assistants and graduate students."I think it's a good idea for students who need the credits, but I would never take summer classes unless I had to," said Laura Hemlock, a freshman theater major.
