Fences are breaking at the foundation. Paint is peeling off the ground and every court has cracks. The fences have holes, the gates don’t lock and the surfacing is a trip hazard. All of this is occurring at UB’s “world-class tennis facility.”

A month ago, my colleagues from The Spectrum and I were given the opportunity to cover the Mid-American Conference Tournament. I sat courtside on press row as the confetti fell on the men’s basketball team for winning its third MAC Championship in the past four years. It was an amazing moment to not only be there for, but to report on as we got the privilege to interview the team right after such a historical moment. You could see the genuine feelings of happiness and accomplishment on everyone’s faces. Seeing real human emotion like that in sports is what makes covering them so great.

No.13 Buffalo beat the no.4 Wildcats 89-68 in Boise, Idaho Thursday night in what was the first NCAA Tournament win in UB basketball history. Junior guard Jeremy Harris, senior guard Wes Clark and junior guard CJ Massinburg all had 19 points or more.

Historically, if you lose in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, your season is done. Every trip Buffalo has taken to the NCAA Tournament has been from winning the conference championship. In both programs’ histories, neither team has ever recieved an at-large bid, an invitation to the NCAA tournament for teams who do not win their conference championship.

I remember being home when the Olympics were on and everybody in my family watched it. Getting everyone to agree on something to watch was a rare occurrence growing up. The Olympics have a unique air of prestige similar to the World Cup. Plus, it’s pretty easy to follow; figure out the rules of the event, root for the U.S. athletes and if Usain Bolt is out there, you root for him.
