Protesters filled the sidewalk across from the Center for Tomorrow as event attendees lined up to see former All-American swimmer turned political commentator Riley Gaines speak on UB’s North Campus Thursday night. Six University Police officers assembled barricades across the street to block off the road, while protesters waved signs. Produced by John Garcia / The Spectrum
About 75 student protesters chased students affiliated with UB's chapter of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) after conservative commentator Allen West spoke on campus last spring. The chase was captured on security camera footage obtained by The Spectrum. West, a former Republican congressman, was invited by YAF to deliver a speech titled “America is not Racist” in the Student Union. Dozens of students protested before and during West’s speech. The Erie County District Attorney’s office told The Spectrum it wouldn’t press charges against any individuals in connection with the incident. From March 9-12, UB’s theatre department staged “Eurydice,” a retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus through the eyes of his wife. Senior theatre major E Lyons gave The Spectrum a backstage look at their set design for the show: a surreal, candy-colored backdrop constructed from a wide range of trash and found objects. Join Lyons on a tour of “Eurydice’s” bizarre and inventive set. Video by Moaz Elazzazi
Conservative political commentator Michael Knowles delievered a speech at the University at Buffalo on March 9, 2023, titled "How Radical Feminism Destroys Women (And Everything Else)." Knowles spoke at UB days after making remarks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) where he called for “transgenderism” to be “eradicated from public life entirely,” prompting students, faculty and community members to protest outside the site of Knowles' speech.
Local band DaisyChain stopped by the newsroom in December to give the inaugural performance in The Spectrum’s brand new concert series. The three-piece rock group, fronted by UB electrical engineering senior Joseph Gogan and backed by guitarists Katie Missert and Matthew Riley, played a raucous set that featured both original songs and a host of classic covers.
