In each edition of Culture Perspectives, The Spectrum will ask UB students seven questions that survey their observations, opinions and beliefs to help us understand our cultural climate. We’ll ask questions about the media students are consuming, where they stand with their own generation and more. One question will always tackle a hot topic in our culture — whether local, national or global.

It’s all 20 minutes away — if you have a car, that is.

Repetition of the words “clitoris” and “vagina” are — surprisingly — not the most eyebrow-raising aspects of the 2023 feminist documentary, “The Disappearance of Shere Hite.” Instead, it’s that the 30th-best-selling book of all time, “The Hite Report,” seems to have been forgotten.

As the holiday season approaches, so too does finals season. And as usual, one of my favorite holidays, Hanukkah, falls squarely during the last weeks of the semester. It feels funny to have the holiday based on one night of oil burning for eight consistently in the heart of finals — a time when we are all desperately trying not to burn out.

Parking citations on UB’s campuses surpassed pre-pandemic levels for the first time this year, as more students returned to in-person classes and UB’s new electronic license plate recognition (LPR) system has made enforcement more efficient.

Following last year’s Camellia Bowl-winning season, UB Football (3-9, 3-5 MAC) failed to live up to their promise for the 2023 season. The Bulls’ 3-9 record this season was the worst UB football has had since 2016, when they went 2-10. UB didn’t have another losing season after 2016 until 2021, when head coach Lance Leipold left for the University of Kansas and was replaced by Maurice Linguist. Under Leipold (2017-2020), UB won more games (30) than any other team in the Mid-American Conference (MAC).

UB men’s basketball (1-8, 0-0 MAC) fell 59-72 to the Butler Bulldogs (7-2, 0-0 Big East) Tuesday in a loss that keeps the Bulls without a win against a Division-I opponent this regular season. UB’s lone win came against D-II Roberts Wesleyan, and the Bulls have lost six straight since.

Men's Basketball (1-7, 0-0 MAC) lost a matchup against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies (5-2, 0-0 A-10) 80-65, at Alumni Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls’ only victory so far this season came against the Division-II Roberts Wesleyan Redhawks (2-4, 1-0 ECC) on Nov. 15. The Bulls are off to their worst start since they went D-I in 1998.

Following their Mid-American Conference (MAC) tournament loss in the semi-finals at the hands of their divisional rivals Bowling Green (19-13, 11-7 MAC), UB Women’s Volleyball (23-9, 13-5 MAC) were defeated by the South Florida Bulls (20-11, 13-6 AAC) 3-0 in the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).

New clubs now have only a six-week window to apply for Student Association (SA) recognition — between Nov. 1 and the end of the fall semester — in what SA President Becky Paul-Odionhin called a “blackout period.” Previously, new clubs could form at any time in the fall and spring semesters.

UB’s undergraduate Student Association (SA) plans to spend the more than $300,000 originally earmarked for its annual Fall Fest concert to fund Spring Fest, a Comedy Series show, provide supplemental club funding, as well as $35,000 for “miscellaneous” purposes, SA President Becky Paul-Odionhin said at a town hall-style event Wednesday evening.

Nearly a decade since the release of the last “Hunger Games” movie, “Mockingjay – Part 2,” there’s a new installment in the series. Based on Suzanne Collins’ 2020 prequel novel of the same name, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” released in theaters earlier this month to an underwhelming opening weekend, but its box office success since then signifies the Hunger Games’ lasting popularity.
