Less then one week after leading the Buffalo Bulls football team to a victory over Kent State and a share of the Mid-American Conference East Division title, head coach Turner Gill may be on to his next job: head coach at Nebraska.
Over break, the Bulls' men's basketball team were stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey in contests versus the Niagara Purple Eagles, as well as the 17th-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers. In both cases, the Bulls were outplayed in nearly every way possible.
Let me start off by stating that I'm not insane, despite all of the extremely stupid things I've said in my life. Hopefully my next sentence won't be one of those things: I think the Bills can make the playoffs.
When the "Average Joe" thinks about the Buffalo football program, they tend to get an image of a mediocre team who has recently been pushing hard on the field and is starting to win games. This might be true for the current Bulls squad, but for the past 113 years, the Bulls have shown many different faces to the city of Buffalo.
Despite strong individual performances, the women's swimming team dropped its first two Mid-American Conference meets of the season, losing to the Miami RedHawks on Friday as well as the Ohio Bobcats on Saturday.
Prior to their World Series victory in 2004, the Boston Red Sox last won a championship title in 1918, thanks to the "Curse of the Bambino." For those who are too lazy to count, that's 86 years that the city of Boston was without a championship baseball team. In the past four years the Red Sox have exorcised their demons by capturing two championships, in 2004 and again in 2007.
With their five-match road trip nears its end, the Bulls are hoping for better days as they lost to Kent State University on Friday and Ohio University on Saturday. The volleyball team has lost 21 of its last 22 matches, as well as nine straight matches to Mid-American Conference (MAC) opponents.
On Saturday, the Mid-American Conference (MAC) held the 2007 Cross Country Championships in Mt. Pleasant, MI, with Central Michigan University hosting the events. Both Bulls teams ran as best as they could, with the women placing 10th among 12 schools, while the men finished seventh in a nine-team field. Junior Mary Veith led the Bulls, and was named to the All-MAC team.
On Friday afternoon, the men's and women's swimming and diving teams both came away with victories in their first dual meet of the season against Duquesne University.
As the volleyball season slowly nears the end of a season that the team would like to forget, one can only begin to wonder what is going on with the lady Bulls? Over the weekend the Bulls lost their sixth and seventh straight games to Mid-American Conference opponents. The team has lost 19 of their last 20 games.
On Saturday afternoon, the women's and men's swimming teams started what they hope will be a fruitful season. Both teams picked up several individual victories at the Western New York Invitational.
When a team is hosting a home game, it brings a certain advantage to the table when that extra push is required to grab a much-needed win. Sadly, the Bulls could not grab wins on their home stand, as they lost both of their games on Friday and Saturday.
A great deal of responsibility is given to anyone with the title senior in front of their name for a multitude of reasons. Younger players on a team look up to the seniors like a child looks up to their parent. On the volleyball team this is no different, with some of the leadership falling on the shoulders of senior Sarah Streib.
For those who took a vacation to another planet on Monday, allow me to fill you in on what you missed.
Drew Carey's "OHIO!" must be ringing through the ears of the Bulls volleyball team after their weekend trip through the Buckeye State, as the girls lost both of their matches to Miami (OH) and Bowling Green on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
On Saturday, sales on brooms may have exploded in Muncie, IN as the Ball State Cardinals completed their Saturday sweep of Buffalo Bulls teams. The Bulls fell at the hands of the Cardinals volleyball team with a 3-0 (30-17, 30-17, 30-25) victory at Worthen Arena.
As I began to write this, I decided to look at a dictionary for no particular reason. As I opened the dictionary, I turned to the word leader. After looking at a few options, I found the definition that a leader is "a person who inspires others."
On Friday, both the men's and women's soccer teams pushed it to the limit in their matches versus Bucknell and George Washington. In the end, neither efforts were worthy of a win, as the men earned a tie versus Bucknell, and the women lost in double overtime versus the George Washington Colonials.
The Buffalo Bulls attended the Spartan Invitational over the weekend to test themselves against some of the best competition in the nation, as well as scout future opponents. The event, hosted by the Big 10's Michigan State Spartans, allowed both the men's and women's cross country teams to see how much they had improved since their previous match, as well as get a first hand look at Mid-American Conference rival Central Michigan.
