After taking a doubleheader from Canisius on Wednesday, the UB baseball team (11-25, 3-11 Mid-American Conference) beat the Niagara Purple Eagles (17-18) 17-14 to win bragging rights in Western New York. Played under a clear sky at the Pepsi center, the game was a battle down to the final out.

After taking both ends of a double header from Marshall last Sunday, the UB baseball team was looking to do the same to Western New York rival St. Bonaventure. However, the weather and the red-hot bats of the Bonnies would prove to be difficult opponents for the Bulls.

The University at Buffalo men's tennis team faced off against the Ball State Cardinals, who were ranked No. 51 in the country, according to ITA rankings at the time of the match.

When the Eastern Michigan Eagles (10-10, 4-7 MAC) entered Alumni Arena last night, they didn't expect to walk into an ambush. Few other phrases apply to shooting 76 percent in the second half en route to a school record 67 percent shooting for the game. With that kind of accuracy, the Bulls (4-16, 1-10 MAC) took an early lead and never looked back, soundly beating EMU 90-66.

In a Division-I basketball program, the roles of freshmen and sophomores are pretty defined. They are expected to practice hard and learn the game slowly from the coaches and the upperclassmen that have been through the battles of the MAC conference.

When the UB women's basketball team looks back on the Toledo game, instead of being able to savor a great road win, they will have to wonder what could have been. Toledo (11-5, 4-1 MAC) won Wednesday's game 71-56 in front of 2,391 fans at Savage Hall. The Rockets fans would have went home disappointed if it weren't for 25 UB turnovers that led to 24 Toledo points.

In the 2001 MAC Championship game, it appeared the Marshall Thundering Herd were well on their way to a fifth-straight conference title, ahead 23-0 in the first half. But their opponents, the Toledo Rockets, stormed back to eventually win a barnburner, 41-36 behind the play of running back Chester Taylor and quarterback Tavares Bolden.

MUNCIE, IND. - All football teams, regardless of their record, like to end the season with a bang. UB is no exception. There were a lot of fireworks in this game, but in the big picture, the Bulls ended the 2002 campaign with a whimper. Buffalo (1-11, 0-8 MAC) lost to Ball State (6-5, 4-3 MAC) 41-21 at Ball State Stadium in front of nearly 8,000 fans.

At this point in the season it is hard for student athletes to concentrate on football when they have mid-terms and papers due, especially if they are on a losing team. That is why it is encouraging to see the Bulls still putting in the effort required to play good football.

Tuesday may be Election Day, but politicians won't be the only ones vying for a win. The UB women's soccer team will also be campaigning for victory as they travel to Cochrane Field in Bowling Green, Ohio to start their post-season quest against the Bowling Green Falcons in the first round of the MAC tournament.

Make no bones about it, the Miami of Ohio RedHawks (5-3, 3-1) are a standout team and undoubtedly deserved to win this game with the way they came out and took it to the Buffalo Bulls (1-7, 0-4). Yet something was different about this loss in comparison with the other UB games this season. This time the Bulls actually looked pathetic for the full 60 minutes.

In the 2000-2001 season Buffalo won the MAC regular season and was the top seed in the conference tournament. They were upset 2-0 by Miami (OH) who eventually went on to win the conference championship. That was two seasons ago.

After playing to a 0-0 stalemate in the first half, the UB men's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to defeat Army 2-0 Thursday afternoon at RAC field. The win brings UB to an even 2-2-1 record on the season and drops Army to 0-4-1.

The drought continued for the men's tennis team as UB was swept 4-0 by Western Michigan in the opening round of the MAC tournament on Thursday at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville. The Bulls have still never won a conference match in four years of competition.

It was an eventful week for the UB baseball team (9-13, 2-6 MAC), who dropped a double-header on Tuesday against Kent State at Dunn Tire Park in downtown Buffalo and came back with a win Wednesday at Niagara.
