Fighting the Falcons for a MAC East title

Buffalo football is in unfamiliar territory. For the first time since 2008, the Bulls are one win away from the Mid-American Conference Championship game. There may not be an official 'playoff' system in college football, but Friday night's matchup at Ralph Wilson Stadium is essentially a MAC semifinal. The Bulls (8-3, 6-1 MAC) face Bowling Green (8-3, 6-1 MAC) for the right to challenge No.

Rare year for college hoops

I am a major advocate of abolishing the 'one and done' rule in college basketball and the NBA. Players are forced to play for schools that are aware of their intended stay.

Moore proves to be too much

The women's basketball team hadn't allowed an opposing player to score 25 points since the second round of the Mid-American Conference Tournament last season. Duquesne's Raegan Moore changed this on Wednesday. The Bulls (2-2) lost 78-55 on the road to the Dukes (3-2) on Wednesday afternoon.

Mack attack

Miami Ohio had the ball at Buffalo's 25-yard line with the opportunity to pull the game within two scores heading into halftime.

The night before the MAC title game

'Twas the night before the MAC title game, when all through the UB Stadium air, Not a creature was stirring, not even Alex Zordich's hair; The jerseys were hung by the lockers with care, In hopes that Jeff Quinn soon would be there; The Bulls were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of the title danc'd in their heads, And Danny White in his 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's attack - When out on the field there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bleachers to see what was the matter. Away to the turf I flew like a flash, Hopped the banister, and opened my recorder in a dash. The moon on the breast of the new fallen snow, Gave the lustre of mid-day to Victor E.

Women's basketball drops home opener

The opening eight minutes were as clean as Buffalo could have played. The final 32 minutes were not. The Bulls (2-1) dropped their home opener to Cornell (2-0), 79-72 on Saturday afternoon, despite junior forward Kristen Sharkey's 25-point and 14-rebound burst. "I thought we didn't really embrace the opportunity to come home and play in front of our fans," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack.

Looking for revitalization

A week ago, the football team was coming off its biggest win of the season and sat in the driver's seat of the Mid-American Conference's East division with an undefeated conference record. A lot changed in a week. The Bulls (7-3, 5-1 MAC) look to bounce back after a 51-41 loss to Toledo (7-3, 5-1 MAC) that included Buffalo's usually dominant defense giving up 38 points before UB's offense scored. Buffalo has a week to regroup against one of the worst teams in the country in Miami Ohio (0-10, 0-6 MAC), before their showdown with Bowling Green (7-3, 5-1 MAC) on Nov.

The "Purple Nation" crowd of students chanted boisterously, "This is our house!" as the final seconds waned down at the 'Taps' Gallagher Center of Niagara University on Wednesday night. The atmosphere was booming for the Big Four's showdown featuring the Bulls and the Niagara Purple Eagles.

An open letter to Athletic Director Danny White

Dear Danny White, I need to apologize. I wrote a column on Oct. 14, 2012 titled "Get real" following the football team's 45-3 loss against Northern Illinois, calling for the job of head coach Jeff Quinn. I realize now that was unfair.

Bulls fall short of eighth straight victory

Buffalo's defense entered Toledo on Tuesday night allowing only 274.8 total yards per game and 88.4 rushing yards per game in Mid-American Conference play. The Rockets totaled 229 yards and 103 rushing yards on UB in the first quarter. The Bulls were unable to expand their win streak to a school record eight games, and the Rockets (7-3, 5-1 MAC) defeated Buffalo (7-3, 5-1 MAC) 51-41 on Tuesday night at Glass Bowl.

Men's soccer has bright future

Stu Riddle inherited a team in need of a change when he took over as head coach of the men's soccer team before this season. The Bulls had finished with a disappointing 5-11-1 record in 2012, a year after making the Mid-American Conference Tournament. Change is exactly what Riddle brought. He put his own stamp on the team, bringing in 12 freshmen and three transfers, including a player from his native New Zealand.
