Tears of growth and faithful smiles

The emotions on sophomore guard Mackenzie Loesing's face told the story. Her eyes were puffy and pink as she sat down at Quicken Loans Arena's press table following the women's basketball team's 74-60 quarterfinal loss to Ball State March 13.

Hardwood Report Card

When the buzzer sounded at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday, March 13, at the end of the Bulls' (19-10, 13-6 Mid-American Conference) 69-64 MAC Tournament quarterfinal loss, it signaled the end of a lot more than just the 2013-14 men's basketball season. It was the last time UB's all-time leading scorer, senior forward Javon McCrea and fellow seniors guards Josh Freelove and Jarod Oldham would play in a Bulls jersey and the end of what many had believed would be a special season. Here is The Spectrum sports staff's analysis of the Bulls' season. Three-point shooting: B Freelove was the Bulls' most prolific long-range shooter and the fourth most efficient three-point shooter in the MAC, hitting 41 percent of his shots from beyond the arc.

Taking it to the house

One might expect a residence occupied by 1,416 total pounds of football players to be a house filled with talk of X's and O's and copious amounts of food. Only the latter is correct in the case of the house occupied by five Buffalo football players, however, as their home is usually filled with talk of computer programming and coding as opposed to audibles and gap assignments. Senior defensive lineman Colby Way, sophomore running back Anthone Taylor, junior offensive lineman Jake Silas and junior defensive linemen Dalton Barksdale and Kristjan Sokoli live together in the same house two minutes from North Campus.

Baseball wins two of three in first weekend of MAC play

When head coach Ron Torgalski sat the baseball team down after a blowout loss Friday, he told the players to execute basic plays and play optimistically for the rest of the weekend and beyond. The team's response: A nearly flawless two-game stretch to seal the weekend series. The Bulls (10-7, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) got their first taste of MAC competition this weekend with a three-game series against Northern Illinois (3-17, 1-2 MAC) in Wheaton, Ill.

Splitting Spring Break

Left in the dust

Bulls' record season ends in upset fashion

CLEVELAND - The men's basketball team had the ball with the opportunity to force overtime at Quicken Loans Arena on Thursday evening by doing what it had done effectively all game - hit a three-pointer. Senior guard Joshua Freelove - who had the hot hand all night - fired a shot with 11 seconds remaining, but it went in and out of the rim.

Three steps to the Big Dance

At the men's basketball practice Tuesday afternoon, head coach Bobby Hurley stood silently at center court and watched as ball after ball brushed through the net. It's an appropriate metaphor for Hurley's work with the Bulls this season.

Bulls drop two of three at Georgia Bulldog Invitational

A walk-off homerun is one of the most exciting plays in baseball - except when you have to endure the opposing team corralling a player at home plate after a game-winning bomb. The baseball team experienced that tough predicament this weekend. The Bulls (7-3) dropped two of three games this weekend in the Bulldog Invitational in Athens, Ga.

Men's swimming and diving finishes third at MAC Championships

After winning the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2011, the men's swimming and diving team has remained a top team in the conference but hasn't been able to clinch a championship. The trend continued this season. UB hosted the Mid-American Conference Championships at Alumni Arena Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
