Protesters filled the sidewalk across from the Center for Tomorrow as event attendees lined up to see former All-American swimmer turned political commentator Riley Gaines speak on UB’s North Campus Thursday night. Six University Police officers assembled barricades across the street to block off the road, while protesters waved signs.

Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), a Student Association-recognized club that advocates for conservative beliefs on campus, hosted Michael Knowles, a conservative political commentator, on Thursday night in Slee Hall.
The spring 2022 UB Custom National College Health Assessment survey, a nationally-known survey that collects data on students’ habits and behavior, asked the question, “Have you ever experienced sexual violence, such as sexual harrassment, relationship abuse… or threat of abuse, stalking, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, or non-consensual sexual contact?”
A wooden arena with plexiglass walls and white net on top stands in the Student Union. It rests on a platform — a large black table with underlying metal rods for support — for onlookers to see from afar. Students set up cameras, sending a live feed from the arena to the SU’s big-screen TV.
Student Union 330 is filled with smells of warm pizza and students chattering with excitement. On stage, two UB improv club members are warming up for the show, shaking their limbs and trilling their lips. As students gather around the table in the back to grab free pizza, a club member makes their way around the room, strumming a guitar and singing.
The event, “Tough Topics: The Pushback of Black History Month,” started out with a quiz entitled “Black Facts.” Students were given a list of products and brands, and were asked to select which ones they thought a Black person contributed to the creation of. Options included the home security system, the telegraph system, caller ID, Hulu, web animation and the three-light traffic system. As they filled out the quiz, music from a “Black History Month 2023” playlist rhythmically filled the room.
In Jarvis Hall’s machine shop, Nico Hadlick cleans off old pipes. Under the fluorescent lights of the shop, he shaves the pipes to remove a toxic metal coating, cleans them and repeats. He plans to use the pipes, salvaged from UB, as support for his “Battle Bot,” a remote-control robot designed to annihilate its opposition.
The NY Deli & Diner — UB’s only all-kosher dining location — and Pistachio’s Bread Box reopened Monday for the spring 2023 semester after a near three-year hiatus. The two eateries have remained closed for an extended period of time after the pandemic due to the national labor shortage, according to Raymond Kohl, director of marketing and communications at UB Campus Dining & Shops.
