I have to admit, I often have trouble doing this kind of thing. Politically charged rants or ironic social commentaries or media reviews or 45-page honors theses, sure, but heart-felt goodbyes are another thing entirely. I don't want to fall into the many clich?(c)d traps that await someone in my position. Conversely, though, I don't want to come across like a jaded postmodern hipster or something. Because my name is not David Foster Wallace, I am not able to somehow pull off both. So, without further ado...

I was asked on Tuesday (April 24) to cover New York's Republican Primary elections here at UB (which, as it turns out, is its own district, at least when it comes to the Republican Primaries, evidently). The brief hard news article that I was supposed to write was never written, however.

If you're like me (and you probably aren't), you're extremely excited for the 2012 NFL Draft. And with the real thing just around the corner, now's the time of year where draftniks the Internet over begin formulating their mocks. Usually, these prove to be a tremendous waste of time because projecting beyond, like, the fifth pick of the first round gets really dicey. As the (ahem) reigning Spectrum Fantasy Football League champion, however, I feel it is my duty to give the world my best shot. Without further ado...

"The fact that we live at the bottom of a deep gravity well, on the surface of a gas covered planet going around a nuclear fireball 90 million miles away and think this to be normal is obviously some indication of how skewed our perspective tends to be." - Douglas Adams

So I just got back from the abortion debate (held on the night of Thursday, April 5, in Knox 109). I have to say, I was a bit disappointed with the whole thing. Between the evident lack of respect between the two sides, the nauseating gaffs committed by both sides, the stupid analogies (the "dying violinist" ranks up there with "Shr?\0xA6dinger's cat" in the silly-analogy-used-to-describe-abstract-concepts-to-laypeople department), and the bad Rick Santorum impressions, the whole thing left me less than satisfied on the intellectual front.

Students, faculty, and Buffalo residents filled UB's Center for the Arts on Thursday to hear Mary Robinson - former president of Ireland and former high commissioner of human rights at the U.N. - speak as a guest lecturer for the 25th-annual Distinguished Speaker Series.

You might have noticed, but I'm a pretty opinionated guy. And, because I have the luxury of having a soapbox via my (very, very, very, very modestly paying) job, I get to be pretty vocal about those opinions.

I'd hate to bring down Buffalo's first sports-related high spirits since about week five of the NFL season, but seeing as no one else seems willing or able to examine the Williams signing in any sort of larger context or with any regard for recent NFL free agent history, it looks like I'm going to have to.

The hard work, long hours, and dedication of 11 talented students and one very devoted director will culminate onstage at CFA's Black Box Theater Wednesday night.

Monday's edition of The Spectrum ran a letter from IVCF representing the club's opinion on its flagrant violation of SA rules, subsequent suspension, and outright refusal to amend its constitution despite being given months to do so. The letter's ending paragraph says, among other things, "We look forward to your thoughtful response," and "We desire continued dialogue." Whelp IVCF, you asked for it. In the interest of continuing dialogue with and about the only openly prejudicial SA-affiliated organization, I present the following.

High art, base humor, and a fair amount of perplexed head scratching were found in the Center of the Arts last Friday night.

If there's one thing the Republican Party has done really well the past few weeks, it's demonstrate to the rest of the world just what homophobic, misogynistic, sex-obsessed, self-righteous, morally-misguided wackos constitute its ranks. (If you're a Republican and were offended by that, I'm not sorry.)

It's hard to believe that in 2012, issues like feminism, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and the inherent rights people have over their own bodies are…well, even issues in the first place. I mean, these are the sorts of things that should probably be self-evident to everyone by this point, right? Does anyone really want to not be able to express him- or herself? Or – unless you're a pro-life woman – really want to be told what to do to his or her body?

A jaded, old, and quite possibly drunk former theater critic stands before a small audience. The stage is dark; its adornments are few. For the better part of the next two hours, he will discuss alcoholism, unrequited lust, and existential crisis.

If you're reading this, chances are you're doing so for one of the following reasons: 1) You recognize my genius, and read everything I write; 2) You're extremely attracted to headshots of bearded men (can't blame you); or, and this is by far the most likely, 3) You read the title and thought "Whoa, I love sex/drugs/alcohol/explosions!"

Be warned: this column is, for the most part at least, going to be about why I don't like Tim Tebow. (Gasp!) If, for whatever reason, this offends you and your sensibilities, stop reading now.

UB's out-of-state students woke up to a nasty (and perplexing) surprise in their university email inboxes Monday – not only would they be subject to yet another tuition increase, but a retroactive one charging them an additional $670 for the fall 2011 semester that, by my count at least, is already over.
