Stampede stats: Bulls collapse in the fourth quarter, fall to Kent State

Kent State (4-6, 3-3 MAC) defeated UB football (5-5, 3-3 MAC), 30-27 Thursday night. The Bulls dominated the Golden Flashes throughout the game before collapsing in the fourth quarter.    Kent State has allowed the most rushing yards in the MAC, giving up 253.9 yards per game and Buffalo attacked that weakness, rushing for 245 yards Thursday.

Jaguars sign Chuck Harris to practice squad

Former UB football defensive end Chuck Harris signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad Monday. Harris was a two-time All-MAC selection. He had 45 total tackles, 6.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in 2018, en route to first-team All-MAC honors. This spring, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears, but was released on final cut day.

Buffalo is 5-4 entering the Kent State game. The Bulls defeated Robert Morris, Temple, Akron, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan. They lost to Penn State, Liberty, Miami (OH) and Ohio so far this season. Here’s what to expect when the Bulls take on the Golden Flashes Thursday:

Volleyball wins last regular-season home game

The UB women’s volleyball team (11-15) won its last home match of the season against Miami (OH) University (16-9) Saturday. The Bulls defeated the No. 1 team in the MAC East in five sets (25-22, 18-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-9). It was first time Buffalo has beaten Miami (OH) since 2014, and they snapped Miami’s nine-game win streak in the process.


UB’s women’s soccer was defeated by Bowling Green during the MAC semifinals on Friday with a 2-1 loss.

Women’s soccer eliminated in MAC semifinals

UB women’s soccer (9-8-3) lost 2-1 to Bowling Green (14-5-2) in the Mid-American Conference semifinals Friday. The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior midfielder Chelsee Washington converted on a penalty kick in the 18th minute. Freshman midfielder Katie Cox added to that lead in the 25th minute, scoring on a pretty pass from sophomore forward Sarah Allen. The Falcons outshot the Bulls 11-4 in the first half.


Senior defensive end Ledarius Mack has 4 sacks and 2 forced fumbles on the season so far, earning his reputation as a top pass rusher.

Leading by example

Ledarius Mack has always had big shoes to fill. His older brother, Khalil, was an All-American linebacker at UB. But Ledarius, who was once teased by friends for not being “tough enough” to make it on the gridiron, has never been one to back down from a challenge. He used his friends’ teasing and brother’s success as motivation.

Women’s basketball wins season opener

Women’s basketball (1-0) started its season Tuesday night with a 61-56 win against Central Connecticut (0-1).  While the Bulls came out victorious, the win was still a tough start for the defending conference champions. Consistent defense kept them in the lead but many players struggled offensively, revealing areas for improvement as the season progresses.


Sophomore QB Kyle Vantrease has a unique role on the UB football team. This season Kyle has found himself as the teams starting quarterback and starting punter.

Kyle Vantrease never thought the 2019 UB football season would begin like this. Nobody thought it would begin like this. During the third quarter of the Bulls’ week-two game against Penn State, starting punter Evan Finegan after breaking his leg.

Fall Fest, homecoming basketball game both on Friday

The biggest music event and biggest sporting event of the semester will be happening next door to each other Friday. UB basketball tips off against Dartmouth University at 7 p.m. in Alumni Arena as the rising hip-hop giant DaBaby joins Gunna to take over the Center for the Arts at 8 p.m. for “Trap Fest,” the final show in the Fall Fest Concert Series.

Women’s soccer wins first game of MAC tournament

UB women’s soccer team (9-7-3) advanced to the Mid-American Conference semifinals for the first time since 2015 with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Akron (8-10-2) Sunday. Sunday’s frigid temperatures didn’t halt the Bulls’ momentum and sophomore forward Taylor Caridi’s goal 109th minute made all the difference for the Bulls, who travel to Bowling Green Friday.

Wrestling is back in action

The Bulls wrestling team was back on the mat this weekend. Coming off one of their best seasons in recent program history, the Bulls have high hopes for the 2019 campaign. Last year, the senior-heavy team consistently put up strong performances, earning a second-place finish in the Mid-American Conference.

Bulls blow past Lakers in exhibition game

The women’s basketball team may have the youngest roster in the Mid-American Conference this year but they aren’t playing like it.  It seemed the Mercyhurst Lakers had no chance against the Bulls, who held a substantial lead for the entire introductory 96-44 exhibition at Alumni Arena on Friday night.

Dontay Caruthers signs with Grand Rapids Drive

Former UB men’s basketball player Dontay Caruthers signed with the Grand Rapids Drive, the G-League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, on Sunday. Caruthers became the second former Bull to sign a professional contract in the last few weeks, after C.J. Massinburg signed with the Long Island Nets on Oct. 15.

A Raven finds his ring

The former UB football star and ‘18 alum’s whirlwind week wasn’t entirely his fault. In a matter of days, Tampa Bay cut him from its roster with no explanation, his plans to propose to his longtime girlfriend Arianna Marinelli were interrupted after misplacing the engagement ring and he had to prove himself to the Baltimore Ravens to keep his football career alive.
