After six weeks of intense training and competing against each other, the athletes on the swimming team finally exemplified their effort, as they opened the 2012-13 season in impressive fashion. The Bulls walked away from the WNY Invite on Saturday having won 28 of the 34 events in the non-scoring meet against Big Four rivals Niagara, Canisius and St.
It was a game head coach Jeff Quinn and the football team would like to forget. The Bulls (1-5, 0-3 Mid-American Conference) were dominated in all phases of the game, and Northern Illinois (6-1, 3-0 MAC) celebrated its homecoming weekend in a big way.
After nearly a month on the road, the women's soccer team will get to finish up the season in familiar territory. The Bulls (4-10-1, 2-5-1 Mid-American Conference) wrapped up a four-game MAC road trip with two games this weekend.
For the second straight week, the Bulls (1-4, 0-2 Mid-American Conference) were unable to get over the hump, losing by a single possession to Ohio (6-0, 2-0 MAC), 38-31. Turnovers and special teams have been Buffalo's Achilles heel, as the Bobcats were able to score 14 points off of the Bulls' four turnovers.
Last Friday night, my childhood came to a close. I was saddened. In that moment, I thought of that line my parents used to say, "You can't relive the past."
The women's soccer team spent its weekend in Ohio and - after two intense games - crossed back into New York with its first victory since Sept.
For the second straight week, the Bulls were dominant at times as a road underdog. For the second straight week, it didn't matter.
Last season, the Bulls stomped on the Bobcats' hearts when they came to UB stadium.
It was a crucial moment for the women's soccer team: down one at halftime, coming off a disappointing showing Friday night against defending Mid-American Conference champion Toledo (4-7-1, 2-2-1 MAC), and having won only one game in its last seven attempts. It would have been easy for this team to falter.
As the UB football team traveled to Connecticut in a matchup with the Huskies, it was an opportunity for former athletic director Warde Manuel to take on his former school and reflect on the times he had while at Buffalo.
Last season, the men's tennis team won the Mid-American Conference regular season championship before falling in the MAC postseason championship game.
Put on your hard hats - this game will be a physical battle. After a tough mid-week game, in which the football team was unable to finish offensive drives against Kent State (2-1, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) in a loss, Buffalo (1-2, 0-1 MAC) will now travel to Hartford, Conn.
After six straight losses, it turned out all the Bulls needed was a new attitude and a dominant leader. The Bulls (2-6-1) brought both to the field Saturday when they hosted Albany (2-6) and came away with a 2-1 victory - their first win in the month of September. Buffalo had struggled mightily since starting the season 1-0-1, scoring only three goals in an 0-6 stretch stretch.
The women's soccer team's offensive prowess has improved of late, but crucial mistakes late in games have been the squad's downfall. There's a reason Footloose wasn't filmed in Ohio. Continued defensive woes led Buffalo (6-8, 0-2 MAC) to drop its first two conference games Thursday and Saturday against Ohio-based teams, Akron (8-6, 1-0 MAC) and Toledo (7-7, 1-1 MAC). The first game of the weekend resulted in a 3-0 sweep by Akron, while the Bulls pushed Toledo to four sets in their 3-1 loss. Not three days after junior libero Kelly Svoboda was named the MAC co-defensive player of the week, the Bulls found themselves in trouble against Akron.
The men's basketball team has yet to officially release its schedule for the 2012-13 season, but its opponents have done so. This is what the men's basketball schedule looks like, according to the folks at UB Bull Run: Among the notable games: The Bulls start off with a home game versus Princeton on Nov.
The offense played poorly, to say the least, in an ugly Buffalo loss to Kent State on Wednesday night.

It's only the start of the season, but the men and women's cross country teams are already showing some progress. Buffalo hosted the UB Stampede Invitational on Saturday at Beaver Island State Park and faced the likes of Akron, Bowling Green, Niagara, Colgate and Robert Morris. The men's team triumphed again and came in first place for the second consecutive year with 28 points.
