Curtains up for Christmas

Flight was years in the making

Screenwriter John Gatins already has a solid resume. He wrote sports-themed essential Coach Carter (2005) and the Keanu Reeves-starring Hardball (2001). Now he can proudly add Flight to that list. Flightstars Denzel Washington as Whip Whitaker, a struggling alcoholic who pilots a plane intoxicated against his better judgment.

Breckenwood breaks into popularity

As struggling musicians in Buffalo, local pop punk band Breckenwood was looking for a break. They all wanted to play a show that would put them in the mainstream eye beyond the success that accompanied signing with indie record label, Buzz Records. Bassist and seniorbiology major Will Folckemer found that break - a weeklong contest held by TopBlip to open for pop punk veterans Sum 41 at Town Ballroom. "When I found out we won, I was actually at McDonalds waiting to order a five-piece chicken select," said Breckenwood drummer Cameron Kukla.

A King fighting to conquer an unruly Queen City

Mike Donohue suspends himself a few inches off of a white carpet while he holds on rigorously. His shoulder is in excruciating pain, still pulsing from the surgery, but he works through it. As he hangs inverted from gymnastics rings in his home in Lockport, he meditates, using the force of his breath to distinguish between his pain and the noise of his thoughts. "Most weeks, I only meditate this way once or twice, but it helps to concentrate on the body and push everything else out of my mind," Donohue said. Using gymnastics rings is just a part of being a "fitness nut," according to Donohue.
