The unrecognized

Behind the Fall Fest crowd, on a stage of his own, stood Josh Azoulay. The senior theater and design and technology major bobbed his head and tapped his foot in tune with the music.

A$AP reigns over UB

On Sunday night, UB mobbed with A$AP, putting in work through heavy rain and several delays for a show that seemed like it might not even happen from the start.

Around Town: Mad as hell

Howard Beale, a longtime television anchor played by Peter Finch, has a meltdown on the air. He screams, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore," in the most famous scene from Sidney Lumet's 1976 film, Network, which professors Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian will be showing Tuesday night through the Buffalo Film Seminars at Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre. And though that phrase is what has managed to enter its way into our language, what the film really deals with is what has spread even more widely into culture.

Taking Back Sunday takes Buffalo back in time

Crowd surfers bounced across a sea of people, mosh pits emerged and a lone fan jumped off a ledge into the pit below. Taking Back Sunday's show at the Town Ballroom Saturday night was full of intensity. The sold-out show, which took place on the second day of the veteran rockers' Fall 2013 tour, was everything fans anticipated. 21-year-old Samantha Boyce traveled three hours from Toronto, Canada, to see her favorite band for the seventh time. "No amount of money can keep me from seeing Taking Back Sunday," said Boyce, who forgot her ticket at home and had to buy another.

As the lights dimmed, the vibrant audience grew quiet with anticipation. Within a few moments, drummer Vinnie Colaiuta appeared on stage and began hammering away on his drums.

Return of The Walking Dead

Editor's Note: This preview contains plot details and information about the show from previous seasons. AMC's long-awaited horror adventure, The Walking Dead, is set to return this Sunday night for its fourth season. Last season ended with former deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln, Made in Dagenham) overcoming his fear of outsiders and bringing the remaining Woodbury survivors into his fiercely protected prison. The trailer for the upcoming season showed a much larger group attempting to rebuild civilization with the undead prowling on the other side of the fence.

ARTS

Three shades of cinema

There are theaters all over Buffalo geared toward different breeds of moviegoers. In addition to a host of mainstream options for big blockbuster releases in shopping malls or sprawling Amherst plazas, there are also lesser-known, alternative options for students interested in film genres that range from popular independent films to obscure foreign productions.

7th heaven

Some days, nothing will suffice but a proper knife-and-fork meal. Not a burger, not chicken wings - nothing that involves getting your hands greasy or going through a drive-in.

Let there be light

A porch is the perfect place to watch a storm. Through gray skies and a power-outage scare downtown, local musicians made Saturday a colorful and vibrant day by carrying out the first annual Elmwood Village Porchfest.

ARTS

Around town

On Tuesday night, professors Bruce Jackson and Diane Christian will be showing The Last Picture Show (1971) through the Buffalo Film Seminars at Market Arcade Film & Arts Centre. This plain, truthful, absorbing film about growing up in a small Texas town in the 1950s is an incisive look at youthful despondency and economic decline.

ARTS

Organically athletic'

There was a beautiful silence in the darkness of the theater seconds before the show began. The audience waited in anticipation until, finally, the lights flickered on and eight bodies stood on stage, ready to dance their hearts out. On Saturday, UB's Center For the Arts hosted LehrerDance, an eight-person dance company founded by, and under the direction of, UB alum Jon Lehrer. The members of the company come from various dance backgrounds - from break dancing to ballet to gymnastics, according to the dance troupe's website.
