While I agree with Ralph Nader that both the Democratic and Republican parties are beholden to corporate interests and are disappointing on many issues including the war in Iraq, I think the political parties are very different in important ways. John Kerry is not George Bush.
As the bombs rain down on Afghanistan and our special forces hit the ground, I hope that bin Laden and his terrorist murderers are caught soon, that few innocent civilians are killed and this whole dreadful episode ends quickly without causing more hatred of the United States within the Muslim world and even more terrorist acts. Maybe it will turn out that way. But what if it doesn't?
Who would have guessed that a terrorist attack could have inflicted so much damage on our country? I am not only referring to the thousands of lives lost at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon but also to what has happened to the American psyche and political process since those crimes were committed on Sept. 11th.
