Volleyball finishes 3-0 at WNY Invite

After falling in the first set, the Bulls swept the next four to leave Canisius with the victory.  

UB volleyball (7-2) went undefeated in the WNY Invite, which started last Thursday and ended with two matches on Friday. The Bulls defeated Canisius on Thursday before sweeping Youngstown State and Bucknell on Friday.

UB traveled to Canisius’ Koessler Athletic Center for Thursday’s matchup, as the Bulls and Golden Griffiths co-hosted this year’s WNY Invite. UB took down Canisius in four sets, 19-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18.

After falling in the first set, the Bulls swept the next four to leave Canisius with the victory. Sophomore outside hitter Katrin Trebichavska led the match with 16 kills on 28 attempts. She ended the day with a .500 hit percentage while junior middle blocker Courtney Okwara had 10 kills on 15 attempts and a .533 hit percentage.

Setter Mandy Leigh finished with 35 assists, while her sister, junior outside hitter Abby Leigh, led UB with nine blocks.

The Bulls returned to action Friday when they beat Youngstown State and Bucknell in a doubleheader. UB defeated Youngstown State in four sets, 18-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-20. The Bulls dropped the first set before picking up the next three.

Trebichavska and defensive specialist Emilie Davis combined for six service aces throughout the match While Okwara recorded 13 kills. Mandy Leigh recorded 46 set assists on 115 attempts while Abby Leigh finished with a .440 hit percentage.

The Bulls swept Bucknell in three sets in the second match on Friday, 25-21, 25-7, 25-20. 

Mandy Leigh had 35 assists while Abby Leigh led the UB with 11 kills. Okwara had nine, Trebichavska had eight, and sophomore right side Emmas Gielas had seven.

The Bulls return to the court on Friday when they travel to Fort Meyers, FL for the Florida Gulf Coast Invite. UB will face Florida Gulf Coast (7-3), Florida Atlantic (8-1) and St. Francis (Brooklyn) (1-9).
