The UB women’s soccer team (3-1-0) topped the Binghamton Bearcats 1-0 at the Bearcats Sports Complex Sunday night.
The Bulls came out strong and were presented with multiple opportunities to score early on, but Binghamton senior goalkeeper Haylee Poltorak made some great efforts to keep the score even.
Roughly 20 minutes into the first half, freshman defender Alya Ruken crossed the ball from the left to graduate student and midfielder Marcy Barberic, who ripped a shot past Poltorak to score the lone goal of the matchup.
Buffalo maintained possession at the beginning of the second half, attempting three shots on goal but were ultimately unsuccessful as Poltorak kept the Bearcats in the game.
Binghamton had some late-game opportunities to score but couldn’t get past senior goalkeeper Emily Kelly, who tipped a high shot at the 72-minute mark just enough to keep the score at 1-0.
Kelly finished the game with two saves in the Bulls’ first shutout victory of the season. Poltorak finished with four.
Head coach Shawn Burke and his staff named senior defender Tess Ford the Player of The Game for her stellar defensive play late in the game to prevent overtime.
Now on a three-game winning-streak,the Bulls look to keep the momentum going when they travel to the Demske Sports Complex on Thursday to face the Canisius Golden Griffins.
