'Harder, better, faster, smart-er': Basketball player recovers from injury

Ikenna Smart suffered from the latter. The junior forward had soreness in his back that nagged him last season. Six feet 10 inches and 241 pounds is a lot of body to support with a bad back. Smart had surgery on his back during the offseason and is expected to return to the court for the Bulls by the end of December. He plans on being better than he was a season ago now that he’s healthy.

Over the weekend, the Bulls (0-5) traveled to Hammond Louisiana and competed in the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament to start the season. On Friday, the Bulls played a doubleheader, losing 9-1 to the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (6-2) and then losing 4-0 to the Morehead State Eagles (4-4). On Saturday, the Bulls played another doubleheader, this time losing 12-3 to the UT Arlington Mavericks (5-4), and then losing 12-3 to the Alcorn State Braves (3-2).

UB women’s basketball routs Akron

UB jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game and held Akron to 13 points in the first half, in which they shot just 6 of 34 from the field and went 0-10 from beyond the arc. The Bulls led by as many as 44 points midway through the third quarter and their consistent full court pressure defensively flustered Akron, causing them to hoist up prayer shots with just seconds left on the shot clock.

UB basketball wins sixth straight game

The men’s basketball team (15-12, 9-5 MAC) rolled to their sixth straight win Saturday as they beat the Miami (OH) RedHawks (10-17, 3-11 MAC) 71-58 at Alumni Arena. Senior wing Blake Hamilton led the way with 23 points and shot 5-of-7 on three-pointers. Sophomore Dontay Caruthers added 12 points, 7 assists and three steals. Buffalo struggled shooting a bit in the first half but found their touch in the second.

UB baseball 2017 season preview

UB’s baseball program has had a tough run the past few seasons.

Last season, the team finished 21-31, 8-16 Mid-American Conference, after struggling through growing pains and injuries last season, The Bulls have not had a winning season since 2013.

UB women’s basketball falls at home to Northern Illinois

For three quarters, UB women’s basketball (16-7, 6-6) held Northern Illinois (17-6, 10-2) and their No. 3 scoring offense in the country in check.

The Bulls entered the fourth quarter leading 65-60 before the Huskies ripped off 16 consecutive points to start the fourth quarter, opening up a lead they would never relinquish.

They defeated the Kent State Golden Flashes (9-9, 1-4 MAC) 82-69 at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. The game included many large runs from both teams and finished with the Bulls on a 23-5 run.

UB men’s soccer head coach Stu Riddle to take job at Northern Kentucky

After four years a the head coach of UB’s men’s soccer program, Stu Riddle will be leaving the program to accept the same job at Western Kentucky, according to a Buffalo News report.

“It’s a sad scenario to have to leave Buffalo,” Riddle told The Buffalo News. “Professionally, I thought I could do big things here, but with the resources at hand, this was as much as I could do.”
