Wrestling team prepares for the MAC tournament

This weekend, Jake Gunning gets a chance to defend the MAC heavyweight title he won a year ago.

The Bulls wrestling team (5-12, 2-5 Mid-American Conference) heads to Mt. Pleasant, Michigan for the MAC wrestling championships. Gunning, a 285-pound junior, came away from last year’s event with a conference title and will be heading into this year’s event ranked no. 16 in the nation at his weight class.

Selina Von Jackowski left Saturday’s Mid-American Conference championships with a school record and a silver medal. The junior’s time of 8.40 seconds on the 60-meter hurdles beat the previous school record of 8.44 that stood for five years.


Buffalo stays strong in second half against Akron

Six Bulls scored in double-digits as Buffalo took down the Ohio Bobcats 108-82 Saturday afternoon in Alumni Arena. Junior forward Nick Perkins finished with a game-high 21 points and added four boards


Hemphill sets UB rebound record in win against Ohio

The Bulls won 70-53 after struggling against the Ohio Bobcats’ defense in the first half Saturday afternoon. The Bulls set the school win record at 23 with this game.

Junior guard Autumn Jones led the Bulls in scoring with 14 points, all of which came in the second half. Sophomore forward Summer Hemphill set the school record for rebounds with 23 and had 10 points in the Mid-American Conference game.


Bulls fall short against Redhawks

The Bulls lost Tuesday 84-81 against the Miami (OH) Redhawks to make the Bulls’ away record 7-5 this season.

The Redhawks forced 17 turnovers while freshman guard Nike Sibande shot 7-13 with 21 points Tuesday night.


Bulls clinch MAC East division

With their win against Bowling Green Falcons on Wednesday, the Bulls have won the Mid-American Conference East division for the first time since joining the conference in 1998.

The 88-67 win at the Stroh Center Wednesday night is Buffalo’s sixth win in a row.


Kings of the east

The men’s basketball team collected its first championship of the season. Friday’s win gave Buffalo the outright Mid-American Conference East division title for the second time in school history.

The Bulls (20-7, 12-2 MAC) locked a top-four seed and a bye in the MAC tournament, got to 20 wins faster than any team in program history and broke the program record for most three-pointers made in a season during their recent win against the Bowling Green Falcons (16-11, 7-7 MAC). They are also on pace to break the school record for points per game, currently 3.2 points above the 84.1 record.

“Our guys have been saying this team has got something special since back in the summer, so it’s nice that we can get some of those,” said head coach Nate Oats.


The edge: Buffalo vs Binghamton

The wrestling team’s season is coming to a close and it will host its final home dual of the year.

The Bulls (5-10, 2-5 Mid-American Conference) will face off with the Binghamton Bearcats (11-5, 6-1 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) Thursday at 7 p.m. in their final match in Alumni Arena this season. Buffalo is coming off a 19-16 loss to the Northern Illinois Huskies (3-9, 1-5 MAC), while the Bearcats beat the Huskies 35-0 this past Friday.


Bulls beat Chippewas 85-82

The Bulls went into Alumni Arena on Wednesday night to take on the first place team in the Mid-American Conference, the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Bulls were able to get revenge for a past loss and hand the Chippewas their first loss in MAC play this season.


Buffalo beats Kent State 84-72

The men’s basketball team went into Tuesday night’s game looking to come back from their loss to Northern Illinois after slipping on defense in the final minutes. The team lost double digit leads in the final minutes of their last four games heading in. This performance may not mark the end to the Bulls’ finishing issues, but it was enough get the win.

Kyle Yagielski doesn’t go to Bulls games in the usual fan apparel. Instead of a jersey, he wears no shirt. Instead of pants, he puts on shorts that end well above his knees. And instead of rocking team colors, he puts black X’s across his nipples and writes “UB Naked Guy” on his chest in black marker that “doesn’t come out for a few days.”


Bulls lose 90-88 to Huskies

The Bulls (18-7, 10-2 MAC) lost Saturday afternoon after blowing a 13 point second half lead. They came in looking to go 8-0 against the MAC West division. With eight minutes to go in the half, Buffalo led the Northern Illinois Huskies (11-14, 4-8 MAC) 72-59, until the Huskies went on a 21-4 run over the next seven minutes.

Despite the Bulls’ success this season, there still remains one team ahead of them in the Mid-American Conference: the Central Michigan Chippewas. The Chippewas are currently first in the MAC and have been perfect in conference play this season. They are the last team to beat the Bulls, having a 86-79 win back in January.
