The end of Grantland and what the site meant to me as a sports writer

At 14 years old I decided I wanted to enter the world of sports journalism and spend the rest of my life covering sports at the highest levels. And Grantland, ESPN’s sports and pop-culture blog, has given me motivation to continue to pursue that goal and represented the pinnacle of sports writing.

So when ESPN announced on Friday that it was shutting down the site immediately after four years of production, I was crushed.

UB women's soccer headed back to MAC Semifinals

The No. 3 seed Bulls (11-6-3, 7-3-1 Mid-American Conference) defeated No. 6 seed Central Michigan 3-1 in a shootout to advance to the MAC Tournament Semifinals. The Bulls will play No. 2 seed Western Michigan (11-3-5, 8-1-2) on the road in the semifinals Friday looking to advance to the Championship game and win their second-straight MAC Championship.


UB Bulls get back to .500, defeat Miami Ohio 29-24

The interception was one of the few errors Licata made all night as the Bulls (4-4, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) defeated Miami Ohio (1-8, 0-5 MAC) 29-24 on Thursday at Yager Stadium. The victory puts the Bulls at .500 with four games left and a chance to go to a Bowl game for the first time since the 2013 season.

Wrestling team looking for ‘progress’ in year three of Stutzman era

When John Stutzman came to UB three years ago, he knew the wrestling program needed a change. The head coach wanted to see national titles and conference championships in his tenure, but with a record of 0-16 in the Mid-American Conference through two seasons, his aspirations have fallen well short. Finally in year three, Stutzman believes he has what he needs to meet those lofty expectations.

Last Saturday’s game against Ohio (5-3, 2-2 Mid-American Conference) is everything you want to see from the Bulls: A good defensive performance, a balanced offensive attack and success in the red zone.

If the Bulls (3-4, 1-2 MAC) are going to make a run toward a six or seven-win season, that type of play needs to be present every game.

On a cold and rainy day, the football team (3-4, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) defeated Ohio (5-3, 2-2 MAC) 41-17 and captured their first conference win of the Leipold era. Things don’t get easier from here, as the Bulls play their next two games on the road before a date with Northern Illinois (5-3, 3-1 MAC).

That maturity came through Saturday as the Bulls (3-4, 1-2 Mid-American Conference) grew up before everyone’s eyes and defeated Ohio (5-3, 2-2 MAC) 41-17 at UB Stadium for their fist MAC win of the season. Buffalo got the win – which gives it a little bit of life in the MAC East – with a big defensive performance full of takeaways and defensive scores.
