UB partners to create $47.4 million Empire Discovery Institute

UB, University of Rochester and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center are partnering with a new institute to identify and support early-stage drug candidates.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking re-election, announced the creation of the Empire Discovery Institute on Thursday. The institute will assist UB, University of Rochester and Roswell Park in drug research discoveries. The institute will receive $35.4 million over five years from Empire State Development and $12 million from partner institutes.


UB Student Assoication Assembly talks University Heights and Uber

he Assembly discussed creating taskforce committees for issues in the Heights neighborhood and the possibilities of bringing car-sharing services like Lyft and Uber to Buffalo. “UB administration has reached out to me about the issues surrounding the Heights,” said SA President Minahil Khan. “We came up with the idea of having student representatives to the Heights to be able to speak on the student perspective.”


Greek row coming to UB?

Standard Ascension Tower Group Corp (SAT Corp), an investment corporation, is planning to create a “Greek village” near North Campus for UB’s fraternities and sororities. The $60 million project will involve four phases and the first phase – which includes erecting 30 houses, a community house and entertainment complex – is set to be completed next fall.

Some UB graduate schools may move to South Campus

Tripathi spoke of the potential plan during his annual State of the University Address a few weeks ago. There are approximately 1,400 students in the School of Education and 450 students in the School of Social Work that would be uprooted to the South Campus if this change occurs.


UB student has seizure outside of Knox

At approximately 2:25 p.m. Thursday, a UB student suffered a seizure outside of Knox Hall and was taken to Buffalo General Hospital by paramedics.

A University Police officer on a bicycle spotted the student laying on the ground and called for medical assistance. UPD Lieutenant Kevin A. Will said the student will undergo further blood tests to diagnose the gravity of the situation.

Buffalo has become famous for some of its old, dilapidated buildings and many claim these areas are home to paranormal activity, including UB’s very own Hayes Hall and its surrounding buildings on South Campus. The hall used to be the Erie County Almshouse and Insane Asylum.
