Spicing up Saturday night with a taste of tango

From the seats in the theater, viewers could hear the dancers whispering words of encouragement to one another as they twirled and stepped around the stage. On Saturday night, Tango Fire, a dance group from Buenos Aires, came to UB's Center For the Arts to perform their show Flames of Desire. The show featured 10 dancers, one singer and a quartet of musicians who transformed tango into not only a dance, but also an engaging experience for the audience. "I was mesmerized by their abilities," said Carol Park, a Buffalo native.

There was a beautiful silence in the darkness of the theater seconds before the show began. The audience waited in anticipation until, finally, the lights flickered on and eight bodies stood on stage, ready to dance their hearts out. On Saturday, UB's Center For the Arts hosted LehrerDance, an eight-person dance company founded by, and under the direction of, UB alum Jon Lehrer. The members of the company come from various dance backgrounds - from break dancing to ballet to gymnastics, according to the dance troupe's website.

While sitting in the peaceful atrium in UB's Center For the Arts, few would expect to hear casual chatter about drag queens and fake mothers - especially from the mild-mannered Sean Feiner. Feiner is a teaching assistant who co-teaches Gaming, Gender and Society in UB's Department of Media Study (DMS). The class focuses on social implications behind common video games and gender roles within them.
