Former UB law professor proceeds with federal suit against UB Law School

A former law school professor has filed a federal lawsuit against UB's Law School Dean Makau Mutua for firing him without cause and for breach of contract. Jeffrey Malkan, who taught from 2000-09, claims he was unjustly fired in 2009 and has been unable to get a job since because Mutua has refused to write him a letter of recommendation.

Changing face

Max Levitt never performs the same song and never wears the same costume twice. He spends hours perfecting each routine, song, dance and costume.

Success through support

Kelly Haywood has been competitively swimming for 20 years. The Kenmore/Tonawanda swimmer has been a part of her Special Olympics team since she was 28 years old. Eighty-five athletes ages 8 and up - including Haywood - crowded Alumni Arena's pool deck Saturday morning, ready to compete in the Western Region Special Olympics swim meet.

Commuting to college

During my freshman year of college, I tried to have what I thought would be the complete college experience: I lived in a dorm with a less-than-ideal roommate, dealt with loud neighbors, ate sub-par meals and read texts for countless hours at my small, poorly lit desk. And I did all this while living in the same town I grew up in. I know it probably sounds strange that I paid to dorm at school when I could easily live at home and save money.

Where's the sun?

I am not a winter girl. Because I was born and raised in Buffalo, people assume I'm a total winter-lover. But this is certainly not the case.

OPINION

Strength through crisis

The biggest relief of my life was the moment I walked across the stage during my high school graduation and received my diploma - the moment I always pictured being the end of one chapter and the beginning of adulthood. While I made my way across the stage, I basked in the bright fluorescent lights, unable to see the faces of the thousands of people who came to watch the graduates.

"Yay, burpees!"

I hadn't been in that much pain in months. My legs were shaking, I could barely raise my arms from my sides and my chest felt like it had a 50-pound weight on it. I was nearly immobile for a few days, but I also felt a great sense of accomplishment for completing my first conditioning class with UB Fit Club.
