'Harder, better, faster, smart-er': Basketball player recovers from injury

11/20/17 1:53am | By DANIEL PETRUCCELLI

Ikenna Smart suffered from the latter. The junior forward had soreness in his back that nagged him last season. Six feet 10 inches and 241 pounds is a lot of body to support with a bad back. Smart had surgery on his back during the offseason and is expected to return to the court for the Bulls by the end of December. He plans on being better than he was a season ago now that he’s healthy.

Hofstra (6-1) defeated the Bulls (6-1) 79-36 in Hempstead, New York Thursday, which ends Buffalo’s six-game winning streak to start the season. It was Legette-Jack’s first game against her former team, which she coached from 2002 to 2006, since coming to UB in 2012.

UB women’s basketball off to 6-0 start

The chemistry of the women's basketball team and head coach Felisha Legette-Jack, evident in a recent team trip to Universal Studios, is one reason the Bulls (6-0) defeated Central Florida and Clemson of the Atlantic Coast Conference for it’s best start since the 2000-01 season.

UB's Joe Licata is 'Buffalo Joe'

It’s fair to say there’s been little stability in the UB football program over the past few seasons. The Bulls have had a coaching change. They’ve seen the highs of a bowl game in 2013 and the lows of back-to-back five-win and bowlless seasons the past two years. But through it all there has been one constant – Joe Licata, a local high school quarterback who stayed local and shattered most of the passing records at UB.

Joe Licata's played every single game of his college career with family in the stand, and they were there once again for his last game Friday despite wind, rain and a heart-breaking season-ending 31-26 loss to Massachusetts. His father Gil and mother Paula have never missed a game – home or away – while his three sisters have only missed a few.

The football team (5-6, 3-4 Mid-American Conference) is still a win away from bowl eligibility after a 41-21 loss to Akron (6-5, 4-3 MAC) at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field Saturday. Buffalo will now need a win over Massachusetts (2-9, 1-6) in its season finale at UB Stadium on Friday for any chance at the program’s third bowl game since returning to Division I in 1999.

Here’s how The Spectrum graded the Bulls’ performance Saturday.

Danny White brought quick success, but future is questionable

11/20/15 12:05am | By Tom Dinki

A Mid-Major like UB needs to think long-term. Nothing is a quick fix. You have to slowly inch your way up the college athletics landscape. You don’t, as White always liked to say, build “America’s next big-time college athletics brand” in three years.

White could move up a conference and get a larger budget to play with in three years. UB cannot.
