Worst wings: Anchor Bar
We’re not going to make any friends with this one, but the Anchor Bar, the so-called birthplace of the Buffalo wing, has let its quality lapse as it’s played into Food Network stardom and become nothing more than a tourist trap. Simply put, the wings aren’t worth the jacked up prices, slow service and endless crowds of out-of-towners looking for “authentic” Buffalo wings while passing through the Queen City.
Anchor Bar has gotten too cocky. It’s become too focused on making so many different varieties of wings that it’s lost touch with the reason why everyone loves a good batch of chicken wings: the sauce. Anchor Bar sauce has gotten fancy and even almost gourmet. It’s said so long to the days of hot, medium and mild shake sauce and hello to a slew of different flavors, including peanut butter and jelly. Anchor Bar is so focused on concocting new wing flavors that the quality of its traditional wings has gone by the wayside.
If you’re looking for chicken wings that don’t taste like chicken wings and you can deal with 30-minute waits, then Anchor Bar is the place for you. But for those of us that prefer quality wings drenched in hot sauce that aren’t small and overpriced, then steer clear of Anchor Bar. Your stomach and wallet will thank you.
